In this episode of Adventure Without Boundaries, students dive into the fascinating world of starfish. We explore the coast of British Columbia to discover how starfish live, what makes them unique, and the surprising superpowers they use to survive, from regrowing arms to sensing light.

Along the way, Ren and his siblings share the joy of exploring together, showing that learning about the ocean can be fun, exciting, and truly for everyone. This lesson builds observation skills, introduces key marine science concepts, and connects science with emotion through our Emotions on Deck segment, which focuses on Happiness. Roake reflects on the moments that make him smile, reminding us that joy can come from discovery, teamwork, and celebrating one another.

Video Overview - 5 Minutes & 35 Seconds Runtime

Intro
The episode begins with Ren standing waist-deep in the ocean as he discovers a starfish. His excitement shines as he shouts “WOW!” before plunging beneath the water to try and reach it. This moment of discovery pulls students in with energy and curiosity, inviting them to join the adventure.

Mission Connection
Ren, who has Down syndrome, reminds students that adventure and learning are for everyone. The voiceover frames the series’ goal: showing that every child, no matter their abilities, can do big things.

Educational Segment
Through short clips, each child shares a starfish fact — from colors and body parts to amazing abilities like regrowing arms. A quick narrated section expands on these facts with key science points, designed to build observation skills and spark questions.

Calming Montage
Students are guided into a slower-paced sequence of marine life footage. Gentle music and visuals of crabs, fish, and sea grasses provide a chance to observe, reflect, and connect with the beauty of the ocean.

Conservation Call to Action
A short voiceover connects the lesson to stewardship: the ocean is home to countless species, all working together in balance. Students are encouraged to think about how we can care for the ocean.

Emotions on Deck
This week’s theme is Happiness. The Osborne kids reflect on what made them smile during the adventure, helping students connect science to emotions and recognize joy in teamwork, discovery, and nature.

Closing
The episode ends with a peaceful underwater scene, gliding over rocks and swaying seaweed as small crabs move across the ocean floor. Over this, Roake’s voice thanks students for joining and reminds them that they can do big things too, leaving viewers with a calm, inspiring send-off that reinforces the series’ message.

Worksheets (Core Activity)

Click the links below to download the lesson worksheets. Each one is designed for specific grade levels to support age-appropriate learning. These are quick activities that can fit into a short lesson block.

  • Grades K–1: Coloring activities and early letter practice (5-10 min)

  • Grades 2–3: Coloring and starfish body part identification (5-10 min)

  • Grades 4–5: Body part identification, reading comprehension, and coloring (8-12 min)

Sensory Exercise (Core Activity)

After completing the worksheets, invite your students to imagine what it feels like to be a starfish. Students can lie on the floor or stand beside their desks. Encourage them to picture their head, arms, and legs as the arms of a starfish. Slowly guide them to move their muscles like the tiny tube feet of a starfish, reaching, stretching, and exploring. This activity helps connect body awareness to the science lesson while providing a calming sensory break.

Episode Question (Core Activity)

Wrap up the lesson with a lighthearted classroom discussion. Ask your students:

“If I could grow back something I lost, what would it be?”

Teachers are encouraged to lead by example, sharing something simple and relatable, such as glasses, car keys, or a favorite toy. Student answers should stay fun and playful while helping them understand just how incredible it is that starfish can regrow lost arms and, in some cases, even their entire central disc.

Discussion Goal: This activity builds imagination and reinforces the science concept of regeneration in a way that feels personal and memorable for each student.

Classroom Q&A (Optional)

At the end of the lesson, teachers are encouraged to invite students to share any questions about the episode or for Roake, Ren, and Freyja. Questions can be submitted as a comment below or via email, and selected ones will be featured in future episodes. This gives students a meaningful way to feel connected, knowing their voices matter and are part of the journey.

Please include the question along with the teacher’s name, class, and school so we can give your class a proper shoutout.

Extend the Lesson (Optional)

For classes with extra time, here are a few ways to build on today’s learning:

  • Ocean Stewardship: Discuss why it is important to care for the ocean and the creatures that depend on it.

  • Imagine Like a Starfish: Ask students to picture what life would be like with 20 arms or living on the sea floor in total darkness.

  • Art Connection: Invite students to draw or color their own “super starfish” with as many arms or unique patterns as they like.
