Exploring Lava Tubes - Ep. 4

Below you will find Episode Three of Adventure Without Boundaries, along with lesson plans and classroom resourScroll down for worksheets, activities, and ideas to help bring the adventure to life in your classroom.

In this episode of Adventure Without Boundaries, students explore lava tubes in a clear, age-appropriate way. Lava tubes are caves formed by flowing lava, where the outside cools and hardens while the inside continues to move, eventually leaving behind a hollow space. But the most important lesson in this episode goes beyond science. Exploring places like this is not just about discovery, it is about how we move through the world with care, awareness, and respect.

Through the voices of Roake, Ren, and Freyja, students experience what it feels like to explore deep underground in complete darkness. They see real moments of curiosity, teamwork, and kindness as the kids help each other, move carefully, and share the experience together. This episode builds understanding, strengthens observation skills, and gives students a simple message they can carry with them. When we explore, we leave places just as we found them. Be gentle, don’t take anything, and don’t leave anything behind.

The episode also includes our Emotions on Deck segment, where Roake and Ren talk about what it means to feel calm and share simple ways to help regulate emotions in different situations.

Video Overview - 6 Minutes & 20 Seconds Runtime

Intro
The episode begins at the entrance of a lava tube as the kids talk about what they need to safely explore a cave. This opening sets the tone right away by showing preparation, awareness, and a sense of adventure as they get ready to head underground.

Worksheets (Core Activity)

Click the links below to download the lesson worksheets. Each one is designed for specific grade levels to support age-appropriate learning. These are quick activities that can fit into a short lesson block.

Sensory Exercise (Core Activity)

Have students sit quietly at their desks or on the floor. Ask them to imagine they are inside a lava tube.

Guide them through this:

Have them take a slow breath in, then out.
Ask them to imagine it is very dark, and they can only see where their light is pointing.
Encourage them to listen for quiet sounds, like dripping water.
Ask them to notice how their body feels when everything is still and calm.

After 20 to 30 seconds, have students open their eyes.

Ask the class how it felt to be in a quiet, dark space. Did it feel calm, scary, or something else?

Reinforce the idea that slowing down, being gentle, and paying attention to your surroundings can help you feel steady, even in a new environment.

Episode Question (Core Activity)

Wrap up the lesson with a short, imaginative discussion. Ask your students:

“Imagine you are standing at the entrance of a dark cave. You take a step inside, and the light starts to disappear. How do you think you would feel? Would it be scary, exciting, peaceful, or something else? What would help you feel calm?”

Encourage students to share their answers and listen to how others feel differently. Some may feel excited, while others may feel unsure or even a little nervous.

Ask students what they would do next. Would they move slowly? Stay close to a friend? Use a light?

Remind them that exploring new places is not just about being brave, it is about being aware, moving carefully, and taking care of yourself and the people around you.

Classroom Q&A (Optional)

At the end of the lesson, teachers are encouraged to invite students to share any questions about the episode or for Roake, Ren, and Freyja. Questions can be submitted as a comment below or via email, and selected ones will be featured in future episodes. This gives students a meaningful way to feel connected, knowing their voices matter and are part of the journey.

Please include the question along with the teacher’s name, class, and school so we can give your class a proper shoutout.

Extend the Lesson (Optional)

For classes with extra time, here are a few ways to build on today’s learning:

Volcano Connection - Talk about where lava comes from and how volcanoes create lava flows. Discuss how many eruptions over time can form lava tubes.

Types of Caves - Explain that lava tubes are formed by lava, but some caves are formed by water slowly shaping rock. Ask students how these caves might look or feel different.

Bats in the Dark - Introduce how bats live in caves and use echolocation to move and find food in complete darkness.
